To some extent, I quite agree with yiyuan. Because culture is a very important factor, which can influence the final result. In the business world, the company can go forward to achieve its target while neglecting its social response. It may achieve its short run goals. But the culture which focus only on business result, will create an unhealthy competition atmosphere within the company. In the long run, it is not good.
But I have to say, another factor is that if you stop at this point, you will lose the good timing to be successful. Just take climbing as the example, if you spend some time helping that man, your whole plan will be delayed. Then the outside surrounding will be changed, which will possibly make you can not climb at all.
Then some will suggest that you can leave some people there to help and lead the rest to continue the trip. Yes, if you have enough resources, you can do that. But another reality is that usually you only have limited resource. How to allocate resource to have the best output is also a topic discussed quite often in the business world.
So, I think for that case, there is no right or wrong answer. (Quite often, such discussion will lead to nothing.) The b-schools like it, just want to make everyone aware of sort of ethical issues, especially after so many corporate scandals.
What I suggest is you shall always keep ethics in mind. But how to make certain decision shall be case by case. And you do not need to spend so much time arguing that, because there is no best answer. |
