Silent Hill
In the mirror, I saw my dispirited face. Who’s that freak---I couldn’t believe that this unshaven man was called James---my name. I took a deep breath and walked out the toilet.
I found a map of this area in a car. “It might be helpful for me to work out the roads in this fogbound small town.” I spoke to myself so as to pick up a little courage, and then, I started the unforeseeable journey. “What’s out there waiting for me?” I kept asking myself that question…
“In my restless dream, I see that town.
Silent Hill.
You promised you’d take me there again someday.
But you never did.
Well I’m alone there now…
In our “special place”…
Waiting for you.”
Mary
In the past three years, I kept drinking in order to benumb myself from losing Mary. “Can’t I start a new life without you, Mary?” I tried many times to search for the root of the problem, but it was no good. So even though I didn’t believe that my wife, who had been dead three years ago, would write to me, I determined to come to the Silent Hill. Maybe only be here can I work out the truth. Mary, are you still alive in this town? What does the “special place” in the letter refer to?
Running through a small path for quite a long time, I set my foot on a cemetery. I don’t like the atmosphere here, especially on this terrible night! When I was just about to leave, I saw a woman standing in front of her mother’s gravestone.
“Excuse me,” I asked: “Is this the way leading to Silent Hill?”
“Yes,” the woman turned her face to me, “but, you’d better keep away, I mean, there is something wrong with this Silent Hill.”
“Do you mean it’s dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“I have to meet a person there, a very important person for me. Anyway, thank you! I will take care.”
I waved goodbye and quickly ran to the main road of the town. Nobody is there. The fog is even thicker that I can hardly tell where I am. Fortunately, according to my memory, also with the help of the map, I found a way to the St. Bridge Street, which leads to the Lake.
When I went through the downtown park, I caught a view of Mary’s back. But when I got a little bit closer, I found I had made a mistake. Her hairstyle was totally different from Mary’s. But they looked like twins! It was unbelievable! Through talking with her, I got to know that this woman---Maria, was hardly connected with Mary.
One thing was absolutely true: the “special place” was not here.
Suddenly, some pieces of broken memories appeared to my mind. “I think maybe she is waiting in the hotel, is that hotel still there?”
“Yes.”
Finally, I decided to take Maria with me because she was so much like Mary. On the other hand, I couldn’t let a woman be alone in this dangerous place. So I continued running forward and she just followed. A few minutes later, we stopped in front of the “Peaceful Harbor Hospital,” where my wife used to have medical care. Intuition told me that I might find out some clue inside this building. Meanwhile Maria told me that she was so tired and couldn’t search the hospital with me. So I guided her directly to the room 204, where Mary used to be treated. I helped her lie down in bed.
“Thank you, James. I will just have a short rest here.”
“Ok. Just stay here and wait for me. I will check out this building as soon as possible, then, I’ll be back and pick you up.”
When I closed the door, a strong feeling struck me that Maria was going to be in trouble. But it was not that important to me at that time. I searched every room I could enter into. Except for some useless documents, I got a key to the “Silent Hill” hotel. That was really something I concerned about. I reloaded my revolver and came back to the room 204. When we walked through a long passage, an ugly monster appeared behind us! Obviously, the only choice was to escape. We ran along the passage to the only elevator. In the last second, Maria didn’t get onto the floor. I almost caught her hand, but it was too late… I could do nothing. I didn’t save her life just like I did nothing for Mary.
“Anyway, I must cheer up to find out the truth in that hotel!” I told myself and quickly ran to the wharf. Compared with the darkness, the peaceful lake made me calm and cool. In an uncertain distance, a light cut through the thick fog--- “though faint, it stands for hope.” I stepped onto a boat and rowed it toward the lighthouse. In the hotel room 312---the “special place,” I watched a piece of movie recorded when we stayed together. At that moment, all the broken memories, and all the past wonderful times just came back to my mind.
“Because I didn’t want to see such great pain that she tolerated. Maybe, the earlier I end her life, the less pain she will bear!” I killed her myself… But I loved her, forever…
After finding out the truth, I will no longer be perplexed. Everything started from me, now, it is time to call an end of all these…
I left this place. My tour of the “Silent Hill” helped me to get back a good wife---though before my finding her, I had completely lost her. That James, who tried hard to avoid real life, had perished with the fog…
“To live a better life!” ---That’s what Mary said to me. Yes, I surely will.
Goodbye, Mary, and--- farewell, Silent Hill… |
