It is ture that some foreigners do not know China at all, but, to be frank,

I do not  meet  anyone whom like your friend discribed. I lived

with an English family several days ago, in fact, I lived there for

approximately two months.I do not think they know nothing about China,

on the contrary, they know a lot of thing, especially about our big

size of population.   (Everybody in the world knows this.Joking)

They had a lot of things which made by China, such as their children's

toys. They know that along with the development of the economy in

China, people's life are becoming better and better. As a result, many

students go abroad for studying. They know it is very expensive for

these students to study in London. So, they do not think China is poor.

Frankly speaking, nobody has negative emotion to Chinese people. If you

are active and have postive relationship with others,  certainly, other

people will treat you very well
